Hojicha Japanese Green Tea Leaves

Description

Hojicha is a roasted Japanese green tea known for its naturally low caffeine, warm toasted aroma, and smooth, earthy flavour. It’s the tea people in Japan turn to when they want deep comfort without the jitters - calming, cozy, and easy on the palate.

Hojicha is made by taking steamed green tea and slowly roasting them at high temperatures. This roasting process transforms the leaves from bright green to a rich chestnut brown, creating a nutty, caramel-like aroma and removing most of the caffeine. The result is a cup that’s round, mellow, and deeply soothing.

Mezame Hojicha is sourced from Kagoshima in Kyushu - Japan’s volcanic tea-growing region known for its nutrient-dense soils and clean flavour profiles. The leaves are roasted in small batches to ensure an even, balanced aroma with no bitterness. Smooth, warm, and aromatic, our Hojicha is the perfect evening tea or a grounding companion to your daily routine.

Four simple steps to make matcha

What is Hojicha

Ultra-low caffeine, zero jitters

Hojicha is roasted, which naturally reduces caffeine. Result: you can drink it anytime - evenings included - without messing up sleep or feeling wired.

Easy on the gut, easy to drink daily

Roasting removes the sharp, grassy edge you get in green teas. Result: smooth, warm, slightly nutty flavor that’s gentle on digestion and doesn’t feel “harsh” on an empty stomach.

Comforting ritual without overstimulation

If sencha/matcha are about alertness, hojicha is about calm. Result: a grounding, cozy tea you can keep coming back to - especially when you want to slow down, not speed up.

FAQs to help you make an informed decision

1

Does hojicha have caffeine?

Yes, but very low. The roasting process significantly reduces caffeine compared to green teas like sencha or matcha.

2

What does hojicha taste like?

Warm, roasted, nutty, slightly sweet - almost like toasted grains or light coffee, but without bitterness.

If it tastes harsh, it’s low quality or over-brewed.

3

Do you offer express shipping?

We offer express shipping based on special requests. Just DM us and we can make it happen at a nominal extra cost. Some of our products are also available on quick commerce platforms and amazon for quicker deliveries.

4

Can I drink hojicha at night?

Yes - that’s actually one of its biggest advantages.

Low caffeine + calming profile makes it ideal post-dinner or before bed.

5

Is hojicha good for digestion?

Yes, relatively speaking. It’s gentler than most green teas because roasting reduces astringency.

That’s why many people tolerate it better on an empty stomach.

6

How do I brew hojicha correctly?

Use hot water (90–95°C), steep for ~30–60 seconds.

Unlike sencha, hojicha is forgiving - but don’t overdo it or it can taste too strong.

7

How is hojicha different from matcha or sencha?

Hojicha is roasted → low caffeine, warm/nutty taste.

Sencha/matcha are unroasted → higher caffeine, grassy/umami taste.

Simple: hojicha = calm; matcha/sencha = energy.
