What is Sencha?

Sencha is a steamed and rolled Japanese green tea leaves traditionally consumed for its health benefits and as a refreshing drink that brings people together, whether at home or in social gatherings. Sencha is made from carefully grown and steamed tea leaves, reflecting the Japanese appreciation for natural, wholesome foods.

HOW IS SENCHA DIFFERENT FROM OTHER GREEN TEAS?

Taste and Flavour

Sencha has a fresh, grassy, and slightly sweet fragrance and undertone vs. the more astringent or earthy flavors of other green tea.

Immediate Steaming

Sencha is deep steamed immediately after picking (preventing oxidation), while most other green teas are pan-fried, which leads to a different flavor profile.

Volcanic Origin

Our sencha is sourced from Kagoshima in the Kyushu island of Japan, known for the fertile soils packed with higher levels of nitrogen. Volcanic activity in Kyushu ensures a mineral-rich and fertile soil, ideal for growing the best sencha in the world.

Appearance

Sencha leaves are typically flat and needle-like, a result of the rolling process after steaming. This unique rolling method gives the leaves a straight, slender shape, unlike the more twisted or curled appearance of many Indian green teas.

NUTRIENTS & MINERALS

Sencha contains essential nutrients and antioxidants, including L-Theanine, Vitamins C, A, and E, Chlorophyll, and EGCG. It is known to boost immunity, support heart health, promote weight management, and enhance brain function.

HOW IT IS MADE

carefully deep steamed and rolled

Sencha is made by harvesting young tea leaves in early spring and immediately steaming them to preserve their fresh, grassy flavor. Deep steaming process (fukamushi) is used for a richer, smoother taste. After steaming, the leaves are rolled to release their natural juices and dried to lock in flavor.
